THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2010 MR. PRESIDENT, PHONE HOME – AT 8:10 P.M. ET: Actually, don't phone home. Phone your attorney general. You guys should speak occasionally to get your act together. While Holder was refusing to utter the words "Islamic extremism" in Washington, and was still evasive about whether terror trials will be held in New York – even angering Democratic congressmen from New York City – where was the boss? Why, he was in New York City, telling the guys on the front line of terror just how much he loves them. It's real love, not puppy love:
I'm sure everyone was deeply moved.
Learn? Learn? Your attorney general has learned nothing. He just thinks the guys who planted the latest bomb may or may not be Muslim extremists. Y'know, you don't want to jump to conclusions. Maybe they felt they paid too much for their theater tickets. Look, it's an election year. The White House is running the 2008 "Hey, I'm a moderate" script. Wait 'til the election is over for the real Obama. May 13, 2010 Permalink ARRESTS IN TIMES SQUARE CASE – AT 7:26 P.M. ET: Even as Attorney General Holder made a fool of himself before a congressional committee today (see post directly below), the real guys were out doing their jobs. From AP:
COMMENT: A well-informed observer noted in an off-the-record speech a few days ago that the terror groups used to transfer money electronically, before The New York Times irresponsibly revealed that we had developed a method of detecting those payments. Now the terrorists use human couriers, who are far harder to detect. Nice work, Mr. Sulzberger. May 13, 2010 Permalink HOLD THAT HOLDER – AT 7:09 P.M. ET: They just can't help themselves. It must be an emotional thing. Attorney General Eric Holder appeared before the House Judiciary Committee today, and did his Alice in Wonderland act regarding terrorism. From The Hill:
Oh please, oh please. Enough of this. It is disgraceful. Of course radical Islam is the key factor motivating Muslim terrorists. It's the one thing they all have in common. The refusal to acknowledge this is based, of course, on Obama's desire to "reach out" to the Muslim world and show it "respect." Well, there are right ways and wrong ways of showing respect. And this administration is doing it the wrong way. There are plenty of people in the Muslim world who would cheer an honest description of what we're up against, so they can separate themselves from these extremists. We're seeing here the culminating of four decades of political correctness in our universities and even our press. And this:
COMMENT: It will be sooner, rather than later. And it might contain radioactive materials. May 13, 2010 Permalink ANOTHER FAMOUS VICTORY FOR "OUTREACH": Oh, how our foreign-policy victories pile up – AT 9:58 A.M. ET: Obama has poured a great deal of glittering outreach dust into Russia, and here is the result:
COMMENT: My, my, how friendly. I guess that outreach really worked. The fact is that, at best, the UN will only vote the mildest of sanctions – taking away the mullahs' Milky Way bars, or something similar. Only unilateral sanctions can have any teeth. The Russian attitude, combined with reports in recent days that Moscow may establish a nuclear relationship with Syria, shows once again the folly of "outreach," when it is not backed by firm policy. Iran has been out of the news in recent days, but it is one of our greatest challenges, and no progress is being made. May 13, 2010 Permalink SARAH TO THE RESCUE – AT 9:17 A.M. ET: We reported yesterday how some nutbag "educators" in Highland Park, Illinois (outside Chicago) have cancelled the trip of the high-school girls' basketball team to Arizona because of that state's adoption of an anti-illegal-immigration law. Seems the "educators" don't like Arizona values. But the scholars didn't count on Sister Sarah, who happens to be in Illinois right now. From the Chicago Sun-Times:
Sarah was a basketball champion in Alaska. It was on the basketball court that she got the nickname, "Sarah Barracuda."
And...
COMMENT: Now this is political theater. I'd love it if Sarah broke through the school bureaucracy and escorted those girls to Arizona. The country would eat it up. Go Sarah. Let's see that barracuda instinct. May 13, 2010 Permalink PENNSYLVANIA JOKER – AT 8:52 A.M. ET: The Democratic primary in Pennsylvania is Tuesday. It couldn't be closer. Incumbent Senator and recent convert to Demism Arlen Specter is battling Congressman Joe Sestak: The latest, from RealClearPolitics:
Specter is a known quantity. Sestak is a former Navy vice admiral, something that might help him draw independents in the general election, should he win the nomination. However, there's a shadow over Sestak's service career, and it involves his leaving the Navy. An informed source sends Urgent Agenda the following:
That is bound to come out in a general-election campaign. Americans revere their military, and correctly so, but have a long tradition of looking at retired officers as they would any other candidates. That is healthy in a democracy. Douglas MacArthur, a hero when President Truman relieved him of command in Korea in 1951, thought he could return to the U.S. and name his ticket. But his extreme statements turned off the electorate, which embraced another five-star, Dwight Eisenhower, elected president in 1952. How will Sestak do, if he gets the Senate nomination? Well, a statewide Pennsylvania campaign against GOP star Pat Toomey is different from being elected to Congress in a Democratic district. Sestak's unfavorable separation from the Navy is bound to hurt in conservative areas, which might ordinarily lean toward a military officer. May 13, 2010 Permalink BRILLIANT, REALLY BRILLIANT – AT 8:29 A.M. ET: Just when we thought the Obamans were learning a thing or two about responding to terror, they retreat to their old ways. This will do them a lot of good. From the New York Post:
Look, every community in America should be prepared for a terror attack because you never know what the bad guys' next strategy will look like. After all, remember Fort Hood. But does anyone doubt that New York is the main target? It's the symbol of everything the terrorists want to destroy. To cut anti-terror funds right now is a kind of tin-ear madness. But the Obamans have done it before, and they'll do it again.
Schumer, a passionately loyal Democrat, is obviously ready to throw Obama under the bus if his own career is in jeopardy. Democrats can occasionally go kamikaze in New York, and haven't elected a Democratic mayor in New York City since 1989 – that's the last century. So Schumer understands the dynamics. Once again, the lack of seriousness in the administration shows. They can't help themselves. May 13, 2010 Permalink GOP GAINS IN POLLS – AT 8:12 A.M. ET: GOP solidifying support from voters who may have drifted away. From The Wall Street Journal:
And...
COMMENT: So far, so good. But the election is five and a half months away, about three lifetimes in politics. Don't underestimate this White House, or blind luck. Suddenly, the Senate race in Florida is up in the air. So is the one in Pennsylvania. Obama could pull a few presidential gimmicks. And divisions within the GOP could do damage. The party itself remains unpopular:
You can't run on negatives forever. The Republican Party must create a positive program and image. Otherwise, it's at the mercy of the other guy failing, which is not a recipe for continued success. May 13, 2010 Permalink
WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2010 THE DEMS AND EUROPE, A GOP OPPORTUNITY? – AT 7:50 P.M. ET: This is an original, fascinating take on an issue that hasn't quite made it to the surface yet – the Democrats' reverent attitude toward things European, and how that might affect the November elections. From pollster Peter A. Brown in The Wall Street Journal:
And...
And...
COMMENT: The writer has a solid point. America is largely the child of Europe, but Americans don't want to be Europeans. They really don't like it when Europeans parade their "superior" values before us or their more "humane" societies. Americans actually do know something of history, and know that it's the United States that has had to save Europe, repeatedly, and not the other way around. Americans also know that some of the ugliness of Europe – fascism and extreme socialism – are not especially humane. They also know that some of the "advances" in Europe were made possible by a Western defense alliance largely created by and financed by the United States. If Democrats come off as having a special passion for the Euro, they could become French toast. May 12, 2010 Permalink DESCENT INTO MADNESS – AT 7:23 P.M. ET: We become increasingly concerned at the rapid advance of political correctness at the high-school and elementary-school level, and we'll track these developments. Here's a new gem out of the great, incorruptible state of Illinois. From Fox:
And...
Well said, Mr. Evans. This is just disgraceful. And get this:
COMMENT: Given what's taught in schools of education these days, the "educators" who made this decision probably think China is just fine. This is a classic case of school officials imposing their left-wing views on students. It is a time for parental action. Will we see it? If I were the governor of Arizona, I'd invite this girl's team to come to the state as honored guests. And if I were on the school board in Highland Park, I'd be looking for some new school officials. May 12, 2010 Permalink VIGILANCE II – AT 9:50 A.M. ET: From the Santiago (Chile) Times:
COMMENT: We must be careful, but the story is fascinating. A hotel management student, ay? Remember the attacks on hotels in Mumbai? By the way, why would a Pakistani study hotel management in Chile? Is there a big tourist trade between Pakistan and Santiago? That must be it. Curioser and curioser. Eternal vigilance, as they say. May 12, 2010 Permalink
COMMENT: Just another well-equpped traveler. Question: Why weren't these munitions detected in New York? There'll be a probe, a serious one. May 12, 2010 Permalink
NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD – AT 8:23 A.M. ET: I know it's a lot of fun to play the "purge the impure" game in politics, but it usually winds up destroying a political party. Now, according to The Politico, another Republican is in trouble because some see him as impure:
COMMENT: Now let's just control ourselves, shall we? If Orrin Hatch, a fine, solid, conservative senator isn't considered conservative enough, who is? This is exactly what happened to the Democratic Party, starting in 1968. The greats – including the legendary Scoop Jackson ("Mr. National Defense") were cast aside in favor of this year's trendies. You see the result. America is an idealistic, but not an ideological country. We like our political parties a bit more flexible than do the Europeans. We are a nation of 305 million, with vast territory. We have always respected local traditions. A conservative in one region may not be exactly the same as a conservative in another. Thus, we embrace Rudy Giuliani, even though some of his views will not mesh with those of Tom Coburn. We backed Scott Brown, even though a Massachusetts senator has to make certain compromises. A party must be a large tent, although, clearly, not an infinite one. I'm afraid we have some people who want to start tossing loyal Republicans out of the tent because they're not pure on every issue. If you agree with them, I'll simply ask you how the phrase "minority party forever" appeals to you. It's time for the grown-ups to assert themselves. We expect reasonable adherence to party ideals. But the idea of demanding every crossed "t" and dotted "i" is absurd. By the standards of some of these purists, Ronald Reagan would, today, be shown the door. May 12, 2010 Permalink "SCIENCE" STRIKES AGAIN – AT 8:08 A.M. ET: We include this story because it's another great reminder that many "discoveries" reported by "researchers" turn out not to be true. A cautionary tale, which we unabashedly link to the "global warming" craze. From The New York Times:
You mean, scientists can make mistakes?
COMMENT: Right. And "science" used to tell us that heart patients should lie in bed for six weeks after a heart attack, and polio victims should not be moved at all and... Science progresses. Some research accepted for decades is later found to be flawed. So when Al Gore tells you the science of global warming is "settled," recall this and other stories. Science is never settled. It's an unending search for the truth, with plenty of detours. The Earth is flat, you know. I read it in an old science book. May 12, 2010 Permalink BRITAIN TODAY – RELIEF – AT 7:34 P.M. ET: Dr. Liam Fox, originally trained as a medical doctor, has been named the new British secretary of state for defense, the equivalent of our defense secretary. That is a relief for us. Fox is the closest thing you'll get to a Maggie Thatcher in today's Britain. Profoundly pro-American and pro-defense, he'll safeguard, to the extent budget cuts allow, British defense. Britain's Ministry of Defense is not in good shape. Fox, on a trip to New York last year, told us the extent to which leftish political correctness has crept into the place. Under current policy, officers are not permitted to wear their uniforms to work, on grounds it might make civilian workers uncomfortable. I kid you not. That policy will be reversed. William Hague will be foreign secretary. He's basically an okay guy who sometimes strays a bit from the true transatlantic faith, but is committed to the alliance. From the Wall Street Journal, reporting on a new interview with Hague:
I hope our White House feels the same. Better put that bust of Churchill back up in the Oval Office. There's a new sheriff in London town. May 12, 2010 Permalink
